What is an EA waste carrier licence?

The Environment Agency (EA) is the UK government body responsible for protecting and improving the environment. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Controlled Waste (Registration of Carriers and Seizure of Vehicles) Regulations 1991, anyone who collects, transports, or brokers the disposal of controlled waste must be registered with the EA.

There are two tiers of registration. Upper tier carriers deal with a wider range of waste types and undergo more thorough checks. Lower tier carriers are typically smaller operators handling specific waste streams. SkipNow displays both registration types on each supplier profile.

What we verify

Before a supplier can list on SkipNow, our team checks their details against the public EA waste carrier register:

  • Valid waste carrier licence on the EA register
  • Registration is active and not expired
  • Registration type matches skip hire operations
  • EA tier (upper or lower) recorded and displayed

Suppliers with lapsed or invalid registrations are suspended from the platform until they provide proof of renewal.
